The Promise of the Rose

"I will give you the world", he told her, holding her hand
She shook her head and walked away. "I do not seek the world"

"I can make you rich beyond your wildest dreams," he said, holding out his ring
She turned away from him "I do not dream of money"

He stroked her hair and kissed her and offered her power absolute
With tears in her eyes, she was gone. "Power is not what I want."

She wandered on alone and came upon a stranger who held out a rose
"This rose is all I can give you. All I have to offer is myself and a promise"

She touched his cheek with tears in her eyes
"What is this promise you offer me?"

"A promise to love you unconditionally, and stand beside you
"No matter what may happen in the days to come...

"To always listen to your opinions and to share our dreams..."
She kissed him softly, taking him into her arms and into her life

For he had won her heart not with power or riches
But with the promise of a single rose....
